On alternative readings that omit
"every word of God"
Help. I
need some clarification here. The Douay Rheims Version of Luke 4:4
reads: "And Jesus answered him: It is written that Man liveth not by bread
alone, but by every word of God." But the New American Standard Bible 1995
reads: "And Jesus answered him: "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread
alone.'" What does man need to supplement bread here, ice cream?
The word "bread" is a
Hebrew term that can connote anything that might make up a daily meal. The
larger context therefore indicates that Christ is saying that people don't
live only for what they eat. As a zoo keeper friend of mine once said,
"Animals live to eat. Human beings eat to live."
DR is real
clear but why has "but by every word of God." been left out of NASB. Is this
a translation error or were different texts used for translation purposes?
Some MSS omit the second
line of the pericope.
When
translating what is the standard text? What choices are there? How does
other contemporary bibles like CEV and NIV translate Luke 4:4.

chose to list the entire quote, and footnote that some MSS omit line 2 of
the pericope. Douay Rheims omits the second line of the pericope,
while ISV and NASB do not.
